As Oprah says, "When you know better...You do better". In this age of information, where technology provides us with constant access to knowledge with the world quite literally at our finger tips, many of us are choosing to eat organic foods and treat ailments with Ayurvedic methods instead of conventional western medicine. There is one area that is still a bit of a blind-spot to even the most conscious among us; beauty products. This spring we are delving into the beautiful world of clean non-toxic beauty at GGG.
Skin care is a $24 billion dollar industry in the US, and while it is regulated, the regulations are possibly not as stringent and transparent as they should be. Here are some of the most important facts to note:
~The top chemicals to look out for are parabens, phthalates, and the word "fragrance"
listed in the ingredients
~Parabens are known to be hormone interrupters. The endocrine system is a delicately balanced machine that controls mood, fertility, and weight among many other important parts of life. Basically, it's not something to mess with!
~"Fragrance" listed as an ingredient is basically an umbrella under which any number of toxic chemicals can be added to a product. This is a gray area to avoid as there is no transparency.
~Petrochemicals are also bad guys, any word that ends with "butyl" or "propyl" indicates their presence. They are petroleum derived and can produce 1,4 dioxane which has been shown to contribute to cancer. Even more terrifying, they readily penetrate the skin and aren't regulated by government safety standards. Though skin is a protective organ, it is also somewhat of a sponge. Think of nicotine and birth control patches, these compounds are absorbed directly into the body through a small topical patch!
~The issue is often prolonged exposure. Think of slathering ourselves with lotions, soaps, and make-up everyday for 30 or 40 years. Even small amounts of chemicals can form larger issues over time with constant exposure. Additionally, many of these chemicals are newer and the long term effects have never been studied. Eeek!
We feel that beauty should be a relaxing experience, rooted in self-love and self-care. Science tells us that rituals make us happy, and the products in the burgeoning apothecary section here at GGG are perfect for creating a healthy beauty ritual.
