~A study by the New Economics Foundation in London followed the actual money trail of dollars spent at a chain grocer vs local farmers market and found twice as much of the money stayed in the local economy when spent at the farmers market
~It prevents "ghost towns", or possibly worse the dreaded "clone towns", where eventually each town will be the same faux Tuscan style shopping center housing the same formulaic mixture of chain smoothie shop, Mexican place, drugstore and moderately priced clothing store. Anyone who has travelled southbound on I95 towards Miami has likely experienced this unsettling phenomenon.
~According to the Anderson Study of Retail Economics performed in 2004 in Chicago, Locally owned businesses contribute more to local charities and support fundraisers markedly more than their national chain counterparts.
